OpenSpan for Oracle CEP

Monitor user activity in real-time to detect and respond to potential fraud, compliance risks and identify cross-selling and up-selling opportunities.

Oracle Complex Event Processing (CEP) is a complete solution for building applications to filter, correlate and process events in real-time so that downstream applications, service oriented architectures and event-driven architectures are driven by true, real-time intelligence. OpenSpan enables a whole new category to be added to the streams of events that can be processed by Oracle CEP: user process events.

What are User Process Events and Why Do I Care?

User process events can be anything that a user is doing (or not doing) with any of the applications accessed via their desktop. The events generated could be as simple as knowing when a user is active in a particular type of application, is copying and pasting sensitive data or is accessing a particular type of record. Or the events could be much more complex patterns such as information gleaned from multiple disparate applications related to a specific type of customer that might suggest an opportunity to cross-sell an additional product.

Once OpenSpan sends the relevant events to Oracle CEP, these user process events can be processed and easily correlated with other events occurring across an enterprise. This leads to many intriguing new possibilities for organizations to detect and respond to patterns of behavior by their users and across their business…all in real-time.

And all of these user process events can also be persisted in a database for future forensic analysis, as a baseline for business process improvement initiatives or to create an instant audit trail of activity.

Don’t Just Monitor…Respond!

In addition to monitoring user activity, OpenSpan can enable existing applications to be quickly “event-enabled” to subscribe and react to changing business conditions identified by Oracle CEP, without the requirement to modify any of the original applications. Since OpenSpan can detect user activity as it is happening, this opens up the possibility to identify suspicious behavior, risky usage patterns or new sales opportunities and take appropriate steps to prevent an action or to notify the user of an opportunity before they actually complete a transaction.

Examples of Potential Use Cases

There are many, many potential use cases using OpenSpan and Oracle CEP to monitor user activity and respond to changing business conditions in real time. These include:

  • Fraud Detection - Identify patterns of suspicious user activity such as multiple users accessing a high value customer account
  • Fraud Prevention - Prevent a transaction from being completed or lock a user’s workstation if a questionable pattern is detected
  • Compliance Management - Detect address changes occurring in different systems to a single customer and alert if more than one change is made within two weeks
  • Cross-Sell / Up-Sell - Update current marketing campaign offers in real time based on activity across all customer-facing channels (e.g. web, retail, contact center) and deliver updated offers in real-time to customer service representatives
  • Predictive Analytics - Correlate activity of users accessing different applications (e.g. viewing different websites) for information related to a specific item (e.g. an equity) and adjust predictive models in real time ahead of any trades being made
  • Workforce Monitoring - Provide aggregate views of global workforce in terms of application activity to determine adoption of new technologies, opportunities for process improvement, etc.
