Users Constrained by Large Number of Un-Integrated Applications and Cumbersome Manual Processes ALPHARETTA, GA, May 12, 2008 – OpenSpan Inc., the enabler of the New Enterprise Desktop, today announced the results of a survey of financial services employees, which highlighted significant integration and workflow challenges within their desktop environments. More than two thirds of respondents said their organizations were either rolling out Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) or already achieving measurable success, yet that is not translating into reducing desktop complexity for business users. A free copy of the survey report, "Growing Complexity of Desktop Application Environments," can be downloaded at http://www.openspan.com/pdf/desktop_complexity.pdf . The majority of respondents to the OpenSpan financial services industry survey said they use six or more applications on a daily basis in highly complex, cluttered desktop environments. Additionally, approximately 80 percent of respondents indicated their organizations intend to add a moderate to significant number of applications in the upcoming 18 months, further complicating employee desktops and increasing IT management costs. “The OpenSpan survey results indicate that the majority of financial services organizations that have initiated their investment in SOA could profit from a more rapid realization of SOA benefits, such as reduced integration expenses and improved agility,” said Francis Carden, OpenSpan CEO. “The OpenSpan Platform solves this dilemma by providing the ‘last mile of SOA,’ with a speedy approach to desktop integration that drives employee productivity gains, but also improves customer service and drives additional revenue opportunities.” Key findings of the OpenSpan financial services industry survey include: - 81.5 percent of respondents use five or more applications on a daily basis;
- 79.5 percent expect the number of applications to increase over the next 18 months;
- The biggest challenges of desktop environments in ranking order include little application integration, cumbersome and repetitive manual processes and employees’ need to use too many applications to do their jobs;
- Over 95 percent of respondents believe their business would benefit from automating manual tasks associated with navigating desktop applications;
- If desktop complexity could be reduced, the areas that would most benefit in ranking order would be improved employee productivity, improved customer service, reduced drain on IT and increased revenue;
- More than 83 percent of respondents admit that their company does not have a strategy in place to improve the desktop user experience;
- Nearly two thirds reported their organizations were either rolling out SOA solutions or already enjoying measurable success; and
- Yet, desktop complexity remains an issue.
Conducted by Velociti Partners, a research and consulting firm, and commissioned by OpenSpan, the survey sought to better understand the challenges large financial services organizations are running into with desktop complexity. Respondents were given a series of qualitative questions to assess desktop application usage rates, utilization of best practices and top problem areas. Velociti Partners solicited 200 responses from randomly surveyed IT and operational staff within a variety of financial services organizations including banking, investments, diversified financials, mortgage and insurance firms.
